SANDUSKY — Coach Jim Becker’s Ubly team fell behind early to Sandusky, trailing 14-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Ubly was unable to overcome the deficit Friday in the Bearcats 28-22 loss to the Redskins. “Defensively, I don’t think we came ready to play,” Becker said on his team’s first quarter play. “That kid (Sandusky’s Braxton Washe who rushed for 107 yards against the Bearcats) ran hard, we knew we were going to have a tough time stopping that guy.”

Ubly’s defense gave up a 53-yard rushing touchdown midway through the first quarter to Sandusky’s Delorrin Wedge to go down 14-0.

“We slipped up in the first quarter, got down by two scores,” Becker said, “and basically played catch up the whole game.”

Trailing throughout the game the Bearcats were forced to get away from their running game and employ the spread offense.

“We ran the spread which was effective,” Becker stated, “fortunately, we have a quarterback that can run a little bit and has a good arm.”

In fact, it was quarterback Casey Sweeney’s great pass to Ethan Lemke late in the fourth quarter that brought Ubly back to within one score. However, the Bearcats were unable to control the onside kick, allowing the Redskins to run out the clock and hang on for the win.

“We need to be able to do what we do,” Becker stated about the running game, “I need to coach a little bit better, we need to tackle better, and our offensive line needs to block better.”

The Bearcats were led by Lemke who rushed for 96 yards on 19 carries, and William Spicer who added 39 yards.

Sandusky now sits alone atop the Greater Thumb Conference East Division with their first 3-0 start since 2015 when then went to the regional playoffs. Ubly will look for help from another conference team to get them back in the league race. The Bearcats host the Reese Rockets this Friday night in a crossover game.
