DHIA offers scholarship

HURON COUNTY - The Huron County Dairy Herd Improvement Association (DHIA) is offering a $500 scholarship, set up to award graduating seniors who are interested in pursuing a career in the dairy industry. Applicants must be planning to attend an accredited, two- or four-year college or university and show interest in returning to the dairy industry in some fashion. The committee reserves the right to award multiple scholarships based on application merit. Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of scholastic achievement, current and potential leadership and interest in a career in the dairy industry. Applications can be obtained by contacting the MSU-Extension Office, 1142 S. Van Dyke Road (M-53), Ste. 200, Bad Axe or calling 989-269-9949 extension 602. Community Connections Story Hour, Feb. 8

HARBOR BEACH - Community Connections offers Story Hour every Thursday from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Harbor Beach Area District Library. Parents: Enjoy books, snacks, songs and crafts with your children. Story Hour is best for children age 8 and younger, but all are welcome to join in on the fun. Story Hour is made possible by the Huron County Community Foundation and Huron County Child Abuse/Neglect Council. Details: 989-479-3417.

“X: A Novel” - Feb. 12

Used Book Drop Off/Book Store open Feb. 13

BAD AXE - The Friends of the Bad Axe Area District Library Used Book Drop Off & Book Store is open the second Tuesday of each month from noon to 2 p.m. at the former George E. Greene Elementary School building, 309 N. Outer Dr., Bad Axe. The Friends accept gently used hard and soft cover books - fiction, non-fiction and children’s books. The bookstore is open for those interested in purchasing used books, audio books, movies, music and video games. Appointments to visit the bookstore or make drop-offs may be made by calling 989- 269-8538.

Breast cancer group meeting, Feb. 13

UBLY - A breast cancer support group is meeting on the second Tuesday of each month (Feb. 13) at 6 p.m. at the Sleeper Public Library in Ubly. Details: 810-705-1250, melzwelz@gmail.com.

Prayer fellowship, Feb. 14

ELKTON - The Elkton Prayer Fellowship will meet Wednesday, Feb. 14 at, 9:30 a.m. at the Elkton Missionary Church, 220 N. Main St., Elkton. Jamey Willett-Parker will continue her message: “Seven Biblical reasons God does not answer prayer.” (There will be no shared luncheon afterward this month.) Members say, “Join us for hot drinks and muffins, praise and prayer!”

Homeschool Conference, Feb. 17

SNOVER - The Thumb Area Homeschool Conference “INCH on the Road” will have two keynote addresses and eight session workshops from which to chose. It will be conducted Saturday, Feb. 17 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Heritage United Methodist Church, 3329 Snover Road, Snover. There is not a children’s program or childcare, but infants and nursing babies are allowed. Lunch will be provided by Main Street Cafe. “Leap” - Feb. 17

BAD AXE - The Bad Axe Area District Library will show “Leap” - Saturday, Feb. 17 at 1:30 p.m. “Leap” (“Ballerina” - PG, 1h 29 min, animation, adventure, comedy, voices of Elle Fanning, Carly Rae Jepsen, Maddie Ziegler, Dane DeHaan) “This is the story of an orphan French girl who dreams of becoming a ballerina and flees her rural life for Paris. Timeless Trivia, Feb. 19

HARBOR BEACH - The Harbor Beach Area District Library Timeless Trivia Series resumes in February. This is a program for all who enjoy discussing trivia and reminiscing about the past. The upcoming programs are “Hail to the Chiefs” - Feb. 19; “People, Places & Profiles” in March; and “Classic Radio, TV & Movies” in April. “Murder in the Wind,” by Dave Vizard book discussion

HARBOR BEACH - The Harbor Beach Area District Library’s Page Turners Book Club will feature local author by Dave Vizard to discuss his book, “Murder in the Wind,” Tuesday, Feb. 20 at 1:30 p.m. Vizard will also talk about his experiences in writing and publishing. “The Orphan Train” - Feb. 21

BAD AXE - The Bad Axe Area District Library Book Club will meet Wednesday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. to discuss “The Orphan Train,” by Christina Kline. The book is about a foster teen who, while performing community-service for an elderly widow, discovers that she has much in common with the older woman. Details: 989-269-8538.

Fun with STEM! - Feb. 22

BAD AXE - The Bad Axe Area District Library invites students in grades 4-7 to “Fun with STEM” to explore a variety of activities the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. From Snap Circuits to K’Nex to Coding Games and Activities to 3D Pens and Perler Beads, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Travel series continues

BAD AXE - Neighbors on the Go! travel series at the Bad Axe Area District Library continues Thursday, Feb, 22 at 7 p.m. “Come attend the Library’s continuing series of travelogues given by your neighbors who have visited interesting places and have great photos to prove it. Jim & Rita Wencel will share their Rhine River cruise beginning in Amsterdam, Netherlands, traveling through Germany, and ending in Basel, Switzerland.” Details: 989-269-8538.
